Quality Home Theater Is Now Within Your Reach The TX-NR609 looks set to be another Onkyo classic. This THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified A/V receiver handles content from all your favorite disc-based media, as well as networked audio content from the internet, iPod®/iPhone®, and PC. Six HDMI® inputs—including one on the front panel—provide support for 3D video and ultra-high esolution 4K video upscaling via Qdeo™ technology. HDMI also carries master-quality audio formats from Dolby and DTS, as well as the expanded surround sound of Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz. Three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry and Onkyo’s proprietary WRAT ensure a clean and compelling amplifier performance. And when audio signals are output, the 7.2-channel configuration includes twin subwoofer pre-outs for added bass impact. Meanwhile, a user-friendly on-screen display and GUI make it easy to adjust settings and navigate your content. All this and more makes the TX-NR609 an irresistible choice for the value-seeking home theater fan. Network Functionality - Simple and Easy Connecting your A/V receiver directly to the internet or home PC has never been easier. The TX-NR609 brings to life a wide range of Internet Radio sources such as Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, Slacker, Sirius Internet Radio, MediaFly, and vTuner with unprecedented power and fidelity. Adding to its tremendous versatility is the TX-NR609's compatibility with Microsoft's Windows7 platform which includes the DLNA "Play To" media-streaming feature. Having your receiver connected to the internet also means you can easily update its firmware. Oh, and did we mention it has a killer on-screen guide? Connect - Sit Back - Enjoy! THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified The TX-NR609 features THX Select2 Plus certification, guaranteeing that it can faithfully reproduce movie content as the filmmaker intended. THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen to-seat-viewing distance is 10 to 12 feet and the room volume is around 2000 cubic feet. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR609 must meet the world's most demanding standards for home theater audio quality and performance, and must play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion. 4K Support Via Marvell Qdeo® The TX-NR609 offers full 4K (3840 x 2160) upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by a high-quality Marvell Qdeo® video-processing chip. Qdeo® is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible widescreen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever. Direct Digital Connection of iPod®/iPhone® via Front-Panel USB Port The TX-NR609's front-panel USB port lets audio files stored on your iPod®/iPhone® or USB flash drive. The convenient on screen display lets you see exactly what is playing. As the audio signals are transported in digital form, rather than analog, there is much less chance for signal degradation. The TX-NR609 also incorporates Onkyo's exclusive Advanced Music Optimizer to compensate for lost bit information and improve the quality of compressed audio signals. End result: your music sounds cleaner and more faithful to the original. A Suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment (1) Audyssey 2EQ® tailors multi-channel audio for your home theater speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics. (2) Audyssey Dynamic EQ® maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume. (3) Audyssey Dynamic Volume® automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content (for example, during commercial breaks) while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz Add New Dimensions to Surround Sound The TX-NR609 handles two advanced surround-sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby that offer exciting new ways to set up the speakers in your home theater system. Audyssey DSX lets you incorporate "front wide" speakers, in place of the usual surround back speakers, to expand the width of the soundstage. Set up at a recommended 6° off center, these channels help to produce a more realistic soundstage and a more immersive listening experience. Alternatively, Audyssey DSX can reconfigure the TX-NR609's surround back channels to deliver "front height" channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Dolby Pro Logic IIz provides a similar front-height speaker option that likewise works to create a more enveloping home theater experience. HDMI® Support for 3D Video and Audio Return Channel The HDMI® implementation on this receiver supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel. 3D video brings exciting possibilities to home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs coming to market. The TX-NR609 also offers the convenience of an Audio Return Channel via HDMI. Audio content received directly by your HDTV's tuner can be sent "upstream" to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable. Convenient Overlay On-Screen Display via HDMI® Changing your A/V receiver's settings is now more seamless than ever, thanks to the TX-SR609's overlay On-Screen Display (OSD) feature. With a simple press of the home button, the on-screen set-up menus appear overlaid on the video image you're watching. This means you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to switch back and forth from a blank screen background. PC Input Use PC-IN to easily connect your notebook or mediacenter PC to your Onkyo AV receiver, allowing you to watch your stored movies on your flatscreen TV. You can now easily watch internet videos, PC-stored movies and pictures on your TV. (Audio connectivity may vary depending on your computer hardware, but Onkyo receivers support a wide range of different interfaces.) Great mid-range AV receiver with more than many others with snakeye142 I have upgraded from an older non-HDMI Yamaha HTR-5850th I looked at the following: - Onkyo TX-SR608 - Denon AVR-1911 - Pioneer VSX-1020-K - Pioneer VSX-1021-K - Yamaha RX-V667 - A couple of others - Onkyo HT-RC360 is also very similar comparison to profits, esp. with the price. First impressions: - Box was well packed. - Easy to use right out of the box. I have a simple 5.1 set, but the 7.2 seems easy enough. Plenty of space between things, except the power cord appears to be a little uncomfortable, but certainly not a turning point or something to lose more than 5 minutes thought. - A lot of doors (more on that below). - Very beautiful and above all intuitive graphical OSD. I am one of those guys who do not read the manual if I do not have, and the only time I have is knowing how to program a radio station. - Remote is just ok could use a heavier feel to it and a better explanation of things to do. I got used to it or use my iPhone Remote (more on that later too). Pros of this: - 6x HDMI inputs, one front, one output. - Network capable. Can I use Pandora a lot and it integrates very well, but has many other features of Internet music. - Nice On Screen Display (OSD) GUI (Graphical User Interface). - Support for Marvell Qdeo Via 4K (3840 x 2160 resolution in comparison with 1920 x 1080, although most TVs do not support it, but ...). - IPad control IPhone / app (give it a minute, I have more to say about this later). - All standard features HDMI 1.4 (foot HDMI pass-through return channel 3D audio). - Powered Zone 2 audio output. - Right iPhone / iPod box connectivity via your standard USB cable to the front (without a door (more money) added, although one is available: UP-A1 Onkyo dock for the iPod). - No PC VGA (but in fact, most have HDMI now anyway). - Optional Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner - Great call quality. - Excellent video upconversion. I took an old DVD and set the output to 480i (standard definition) and let the receiver, put it on. Then compared with the output of my PS3 in 1080 and an old HD DVD player (lol) and a standalone DVD Player with 1080 Up-conversion tuner and just blew away. (Note:. On top of the line Sony 50inch TV) - DLNA (for connecting to a home media system or a PC with music). - THX certification (for the show for me and the cool factor that I could not tell much difference). - Sure Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA and all other common decoders. - Ability to easily upgrade the firmware via the Internet. Disadvantages of this: - No built-in HD Radio. - No built-AirPlay (such as some Denon and Pioneer VSX-1021-K). - No video output for zone 2. - No PC control. Some things to note: - The iPhone Remote is a bit lacking. You do the basic things you expect to: control the entrance to the station, the on / off, change the music Pandora / DLNA / iPod is connected / etc, but the volume could use some work and the ability to control bass / treble as large buttons instead of the volume is not necessary. Two things I wish it had: the chance to vote for Pandora or other interaction and the ability to adjust audio levels for each speaker. The registry is easy and it is fairly easy to use. Very nice bonus. - When using the stand-by through, you can select "last input", "a specific power," or "Auto". If you change it, come on. The "AUTO" can be flaky at times to switch to something that is off, but after shooting it I want it out and then back on, the capture. - There is a cooling fan on top, but have not yet noticed, even in the silence of a horror movie, even after the receiver goes for 5-6 hours straight for a few days in a row. Maybe it will be late. I am very happy with this and would be (and have) I would recommend a purchase upgrade 06/20/11: - Added the.
