Whited I purchased this product about 3 weeks ago, and have now come to fully experience what it can do. It is a wonderful piece of equipment that is worth the money. Pros: The system is cost effective. For the money, you get a very good system. Sure, it's not as good as one that costs several thousand dollars, but it's much better than the standard HTIB you can find at a retail store. Remember, you always get what you pay for. If you want a cheap system that will need to be replaced often, this system is not for you. However, if you are like me and are just looking for a good system that's not going to break the bank, consider this as one of your options. The system is also easy to set up. It comes with color coded wires and connections. The back of the receiver has all speaker connections color coded, and the colors match the wires and speaker terminals. Also, unlike most HTIB systems, the surround wires are long enough to support the room size this system was designed for. Remember, this is not a THX Select or Ultra system. It's not designed to play in large spaces (Select is for 2000 cubic feet, a 250 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling; Ultra is for 3000+ cubic feet, about a 375 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling). This system is designed for a smaller room (such as an apartment or small home). My living room is about 170 square feet (I live in an apartment). The system is also easy to use. Just a glance at the user's manual will let you navigate through the configuration menu with no problems. Unlike other HTIB systems I have seen, the speaker distance is fully configurable, in standard or metric units. Other systems I have seen do not understand that your front speakers might be closer than your rear speakers. Instead, they would assume that this could not be possible, so if your application called for a front speaker distance of 7 feet, and a rear speaker distance of 10 feet, the receiver could not configure it. Therefore, the system did not sound correct unless you rearranged the room, or knock down walls. This system allows you to input any variation of measurements, but it's always in feet or meters. For once, I would like to see a system that had precise control of the delay, to the inch. 6 inches difference is about 0.5 milliseconds. Even though it's a small number, it seems as if the front soundstage is drastically different with differences as small as an inch between the FL/FR and center channels. Cons: Receiver does not support HDMI. This is both a pro and a con. First, I priced a Monster HDMI cable. There was one cable at Best Buy for $80. The good stuff started at $120. I didn't even look for anything THX certified. On the other hand, you can get a THX certified Component Video set for about $40, and a THX certified optical audio cable for about $38. From other reviews I have read, there is no noticeable difference between using HDMI and component connections. Another con is that THX specifications call for a dipole side surround speaker, where as this system comes with a monopole side surround speaker. The side surrounds appear to be the exact same as the back surrounds. THX calls for monopole back surrounds and dipole side surrounds. This can make a difference in how enveloping the surround information is. Even though this system has monopole side surrounds, the surround effect is enveloping, but I've seen $10,000 setups that sounded much better. And this system doesn't cost $10,000 does it? Yet another con has to do with the crossover point of the system. Ideally, you want all frequencies to blend together properly. In my setup, when using the THX demo disk, I notice a slight dip in bass output when transitioning from the main speakers to the subwoofer, then the subwoofer picks up the volume to normal as the frequency decreases. By Twain Mark I hooked up the acoustimass speakers to Harman Kardon AVR 154 receiver. If you are into audio, you will know that although this receiver is not very powerful, the sound quality it delivers is excellent. Purpose: My purpose in purchasing this system was two folds: Music and movies. Setup: Setting up this system is a breeze. All cables are color coded and there's plenty of it (20 ft for the front speakers and 50 ft for the rear or surround speakers). All you have to remember is that all the cables first go into the module, and then one single cable (actually a set of 5 joined together) are connected to the receiver. I think this system was up and running within 20 minutes of me unpacking it. What's included: You will get 4 cube array (vertical) speakers, one center speaker (identical to the cube arrays, just horizontal) and one BOSE module which houses all the connections and the sub woofer. Sound Test: I own an IPOD touch and a PS3. I do own a cable box, but that is not ideal to check a $60 AIWA system, let alone a BOSE 5.1 speaker set. I connected my IPOD using an RCA cable and my PS3 using an optical cable. IPOD: This was an analogue audio test, and I knew that this system will not perform its best with this setup, but since this is how I listen to music, I had to perform this test. The bass was great. It sounded balanced and did not over power the other aspects of the song. The instruments sounded nice, if not great, and the initial impression was one of utter satisfaction with the sound quality. However, once I started playing a song where vocals were the focal point, the system really disappointed me. The voice of the artist was just not crisp or clear. When the bass module was allowed to contribute, the sound quality was decent, but a song where the bass module had very little to do, the system sounded almost like a boombox, which was really disappointing. PS3: I tested this system with Dark Knight's Blu Ray disc. I wanted Matrix, but Blockbuster didn't have it at time. I am sure a DVD would have done the trick, but since I own a Blu-Ray player, I thought it would be a great test. In the beginning when the Joker started killing all his compatriots during the Bank Heist, the system astounded me. Not only could you hear the sound, but feel it. Every gunshot, every bang was distinct, crisp and clear. It was like being in a theatre and I almost forgave BOSE for not giving me my vocals during the IPOD test. But then I heard the dialogue, and I ran into the same exact problem. You had to turn the volume up to hear the dialogue, but then it was too loud during the action sequences. I even tried turning the bass way down, but then for some unknown reason whatever clarity the dialogues had, disappeared. Then I tried playing an MP4 file from my PS3, which had the exact same problem. For some reason, this system has trouble with treble or highs. I know nothing about audio, but I know what sounds good, and for the amount of money I paid, this was not good. Troubleshooting: The room where I had placed the BOSE system is not very big. It is around 12x20 feet and I had placed three speakers on the tv stand and 2 right on the wall behind my sofa. I played for hours with changing the direction of the cube speakers individually and together. I also tried different sound settings (DOLBY, DTS, NEO etc) but the vocals and dialogues were just not there. In the end I just packed up the system and returned it. Conclusion: The system is barely ok for the movies, and horrible for music. I actually went to some independently owned audio stores and heard some other speakers. Before I bought BOSE, I hadn't even heard of companies like Mirage, Paradigm and KEF. Awesome sound and incredible picture - all you need from a receiver By Veronica Gross I just purchased this item and am thrilled with the difference in sound when compared with my older Onkyo TX SR705 or even my Yamaha RX-V1400. A few months ago I was just looking for better sound and tried to join forces by using the pre-amp from my Onkyo with the stronger Yamaha amplifier. There was some improvement, however I still felt the need for an upgrade. My wife just shaked her head and said another one of those black boxes for your collection, my justification: it is Christmas time darling. After reading a large number of reviews even from different countries, I came down to Onkyo's TX-NR808 and this model. For sure Onkyo provides a great value for the money, mainly once prices start dropping, however after reading multiple reviews I had the impression that Denon's AVR-991/3311 would deliver the warmer and more detailed soundstage that I was looking for. Denon's Audyssey setup was a breeze, menus are nice and easy to understand. It was the first time ever that I haven't had to adjust the settings after auto calibration, neither YPAO nor the older Audyssey on my Onkyo could deliver such an accurate calibration. Once calibrated I turned on Pandora and my jaw dropped, I didn't know my B&W speakers and Velodyne subwoofer could deliver such crisp clear highs, and thight and precise lows, they always sounded great, but this was like if I had just installed a brand new HT system all together, I never thought this new Denon would make such a difference. My friends were always impressed with the sound in my HT, but this is awesome, it fills the room with incredible precision remaining pleasant even when playing loud or during movies action scenes. My family room is large wiht high ceilings and open to the kitchen, this receiver can easily fill the room, it almost gets too loud at 0db reference volume. The front speakers seat appart at about 60 degrees from each other, after setup was like if they came closer together. I no longer feel any need for additional wide or high speakers, which I was evaluating before my unit arrived. I was even looking for a larger subwoofer, but after concluding my Denon's setup, both projects were dropped. The dynamic volume and dynamic EQ come as excellent add ons, it would be worth to replace an older receiver just because of those features. It doesn't matter anymore at what volume we watch our movies or listen to our music, it is always pleasant and like a good wine, full bodied. Once I started testing first BluRays it was unbealievable how natural and clear the voices were coming out of the center speaker, almost like if the actors were in our room, no longer that boxy sound from the center, all became more spatial / 3D. The level of detail is just amazing, when watching Knight Rider I could hear many surprising details in the back stage, the scene in the bank was so real,like it it was happening right in my room. Many sounds that I haven't heard before and didn't even knew they existed were suddenly very noticeable. The 3 dimensional and dynamic sound between front center and rear speakers makes you imerse even deeper into the movies. Once I tried my old Matrix DVD, the first I ever bought, it almost looked like BD, with the sound quality at a couple of notches up when compared with my older receivers. You need to re-adjust the settings on your BD player and TV in order get the best out of it. In the past I was never much of a Denon fan because it used to be very user unfriendly and pricing wouldn't justify the difference that I could hear or see. Onkyo still has a more intuitive interface but once you understand Denon's logic it is fairly simple to accomplish your tasks, some minor things I still find odd, like you cannot choose all different sorround or effect modes by simply scrolling through without accessing Denon's menu

Most helpful customer reviews 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Works like a charm By Consumer I have an entertainment stand that is all enclosed with glass doors. There is no ventilation anywhere within the cabinet, and I have an Xbox 360, cable box, receiver, and modem/router all running within the confined space. I noticed upon playing Xbox that the temps inside the cabinet skyrocketed, to the point of red rings and equipment overheating and acting funny. Well, not even 6 months after purchasing the console, the Xbox fried, so I knew I had to add some sort of cooling product to alleviate the problem or else I would fry my new Xbox in another 6 months. Enter this product from [...]. The product is exactly what I needed. Using a jigsaw, I cut out the opening in the back panel of the entertainment stand (the thin wood that covers the back... this would be a tough install on a solid thick backing). One tip I learned is that you have to cut out a rectangle a little smaller than the supplied panel cover. I tried to just cut the circles out for the fans, but this made it way too hard to install easily. I went back and cut the full rectangle shape out and voila, went together as easily as everyone else's reviews said. It took me about an hour to put together and cleanup. I turned on the Xbox, receiver, cable box and modem and played continously for 2 hours. Normally, the Xbox would sound like a 747 taking off at this point, but no, it was very quiet. I opened the glass doors to feel inside. What normally felt like an oven (no joke, probably usually 120 degrees plus) was now very comfortable and only felt slightly warmer than room temp. This thing works! In addition, it is truly silent. I just cannot hear it. The Xbox is way louder than the fans, even when the xbox is running low speed. In all, these work as advertised and aren't terribly difficult to install for anyone handy with some power tools. It will certainly cool your components when the furniture design is a dud to begin with. Dempsen This kit is less expensive than other kits out there, so I rate it a good value. It arrived in good order very quickly, was easy to install, and so far is working well. The fans are VERY QUIET and cannot be heard. They do not move a lot of air, and I am sure this contributes to the low sound level, but I can tell by placing my hand over the exhaust grill that air is indeed moving. One note: the parts as shown in the picture are all the parts that you get. You should note that they do not include any instructions on how to assemble and install the kit. You will need to navigate to the vendor's website to find the instruction sheet. That is the only reason I don't give this product 5 stars. October, 2010 Update: after I had this product for less than 1 year, one of the fans quit working. I contacted Coolerguys and they sent me out a replacement module. That one worked for less than one week. I was very discouraged at this point. However, I found a little button on the back of the module that appears to be an override for the temperature probe, and sets the fans to "always on". So now they run constantly, but I think that is ok because it gets pretty warm inside the cabinet so I like that there is constant airflow. By A Customer When I walked into the Bose store and heard this system playing, I was overwhelmed. The crispness of the sound, frequency range, sound distribution, powerful bass... I immediately asked for a personal demo, and I was even more perplexed when they gave me the regular Bose designed demo where they show you the wonders that this system can do. The surround sound is magnificent, and even if you have a mono or stereo recording it will simulate the surround sound in the greatest way I could have imagined. I couldn't believe that I was listening to a 50's mono record in full surround sound at one point, and it sounded excellent! The demo of how the bass seems to come from the little speakers instead of the subwoofer is also very impressive. You hear the powerful and rich bass coming from this tiny speakers, but when they cover the woofer on the subwoofer you notice the bass is gone, even though it seemed to be coming from the little speakers! Pretty cool stuff. Not to mention these tiny speakers produce a sound that's better than regular speakers that are 10 times the size. Bose really hit a home run with this technology, and if you are considering it you definitely should go for it. I had never listened to music like I do now. It's a totally new experience.As for the new systems with 6 CD Changer or DVD player, it's your choice. I bought this unit because I just wanted the speakers and a receiver to connect my DVD player/mp3 player/computer to (although it does have a CD player), and this system was great for that, at the best price for a Lifetime system. If you don't have your own DVD player and you want to use it for that you may want to consider the others.Also, there are newer models of the Lifestyle system that come with some new speakers (jewel) that are even smaller (and more expensive). I tried these new systems and I noticed the small speakers could not produce a sound as crisp and rich as the lifestyle 12 speakers. The sound was much more metallic, like a cymbal, instead of being rich and velvety. If you're trying to decide, don't let this factor influence you in your decision. By Bowen Simmons OK - here's what you get: 1 power supply brick 1 iPod dock 1 3-foot cable to connect power supply brick and dock 1 3-foot cable to connect dock and stereo This version of the kit is compatible with 3rd and 4th generation iPods (those with a dock connector on the bottom) and with the iPod mini. Although the dock connector is electronically the same for all these iPods, the dimensions of the iPod itself differ by model. Thus, the dock comes with different plastic tops for the different sizes of iPods and you snap on the right-sized top for your iPod (check the size carefully before snapping on the cover - it goes on easily, but it doesn't come off easily). The cable that connects the power supply brick and the dock is a special Apple firewire-to-iPod-dock cable, but the cable that connects the iPod and the stereo system is nothing special, just a standard stereo minijack plug on one end and two rca phono plugs on the other. You can get a compatible cable from many different vendors and in many different lengths; which in my case was a good thing because the 3-foot length in the kit was too short. Is the kit a good buy? Well, it depends. If you price all of the components in the kit separately, you will find that the kit is cheaper than the individual parts, even if you have to replace the stereo cable as I did. But, the question is, do you need to buy all the parts. Let's assume for the moment that you do in fact want to attach your iPod to your stereo and consider what you might be able to do without: (1) Power supply brick. Your iPod and dock will in fact work fine without being plugged into the power supply. The trade-off is that without it you will drain the battery of the iPod while it is plugged into your stereo. You can get a dock and a stereo cable for substantially less than this kit, so if you're OK with the battery issue, you can save money by not getting the kit. (2) iPod dock. You can plug the iPod into the stereo without the dock. The same stereo cable that connects the dock to the stero will also connect the iPod to the stereo. There are two disadvantages to this: first, the dock gives a true line-out, meaning that the volume control on the iPod doesn't affect the volume coming out of the dock, so you just use the stereo's volume control to control the playback volume. The audio-out jack on the iPod, however, is affected by the iPod's volume control, so if you connect it to the stereo, you have to be careful about the fact that there are two volume controls in the system, which is annoying at best, and there might be some risk to your stereo if the iPod's volume is too high. It is also worth noting if you have a power supply brick, you do not need the dock to recharge your iPod - the brick can plug into the iPod directly. If you are OK with the audio-out thing (and whether and how to keep your iPod upright without it) you can save money by not getting the kit and doing without the dock. Lynch After having an unfortunate incident with a lightning strike at my home, my Denon AVR-1908 suffered irreparable damage. Within a few weeks my insurance company sent the check to replace it and the hunt for a new receiver was on. Having owned a Denon, I was very familiar with the quality and outstanding sound their receivers can produce - but made the decision to research other brands such as Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer and of course the new line of Denon AV receivers. I have a 7.1 surround sound Home Theater so my future purchase had to meet that criteria. After some research I had narrowed my search down to the Denon AVR-1611 and the Onkyo TX-SR508 receivers, then visited a local electronics store to compare the two receivers in functionality and sound. After comparing the two I found that the Denon delivered a more rich, deep sound reproduction with outstanding surround sound imagery as compared to the Onkyo, at least in my opinion. The Denon AVR-1611 offers some features that I definitely wanted, and some that I may want to utilize should I decide to upgrade my Home Theater. It offers HDMI 1.4a inputs and output for 3D movie features (still on the fence with 3D), if I decide to upgrade to a 3D capable Home Theater this receiver will accommodate this option. The rear I/O panel is extremely clean compared to older AV receivers, due to HDMI. There are 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output eliminating the need for multiple component inputs, this made for a much quicker and cleaner equipment setup. The various available sound formats, i.e., DTS Master, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus encoded with this receiver switch very efficiently with the source material - to date I have not had to adjust this manually. The receiver is very pleasing aesthetically, and fits in well with the rest of my components but does have some heft to it. The Denon AVR-1611 also offers ARC (audio return channel) via the HDMI output to allow for both sending and receiving an audio signal, but please note that your television must also have the ARC feature. The other plus with this receiver is the upconversion of standard definition DVD's due to the HDMI upconversion feature, althought it now sounds cliche - it truly makes my older movies look like new again with near HD resolution. The only criticism I have that prevented my awarding this receiver a perfect 5 stars is the lack of an AC Power Outlet in the back of the receiver. I found this to be a real convenience option for plugging in my JBL PB10 powered subwoofer. I wonder if this has been eliminated due to reducing the overall power draw for electronics in meeting with "GREEN TECHNOLOGY"? Regardless, I found that I missed having the outlet and wish they would incorporate it back into the design. The owners manual can be intimidating, with its overview of all the features and functions designed in the AVR-1611 - this is where the AUDYSSEY AUTO SETUP feature shines! Denon included a specialized microphone to allow owners the convenience of letting the receiver setup your surround parameters without hours of manual work. Not only did this feature effectively set the surround sound parameters of all 7 speakers and my subwoofer, it also measured the distance from each speaker to the listening area, as well as decibel/gain setting for each individual speaker. It even determined the size of my speakers from small to large! To gauge the accuracy, I took out my tape measure and my Radio Shack sound level meter and began testing, and found the accuracy of Audyssey to be remarkable! For the novice setting up their Home Theater this feature would be invaluable. To date I can offer no complaints, save for the missing AC power outlet.
