Most helpful customer reviews 101 of 105 people found the following review helpful. Stream lossless music from home computer By Audio reviewer I've had the Onkyo TX-NR807 for about a month now. It replaced a 10 year old 70W Yamaha Dolby Digital surround receiver. I listen mostly to Jazz vocals, some light pop, and the occasional action movie. My priority is two channel (stereo) music, secondary is surround for movies. Other set-up details: Infinity main and center speakers(see below), small Paradigm surround speakers, Rotel CD running analog outs, Denon DVD, Windows Media Player on PC as music server. Overall satisfaction is high. Before buying, this unit was demo'd in a showroom against a comparable Denon. The sound was similar on Def Tech floor stand speakers and both performed well. The Denon had a slightly warmer sound, which many prefer. The Onkyo had slightly better clarity, albeit a bit on the brighter side. The issue with a brighter sound is that it can be fatiguing for longer listening periods This was a problem I was having with my current setup. Tough choice, but I decided to try the Onkyo as clarity is important to me. I like to hear the subtle parts of the music. The Onkyo, after discounts, was also about $500 less. At home with the Onkyo, immediately I could pick up more details in the music and noticed better mid-range and bass. Not unexpected given I was going from 70W in the old receiver to 135W. However, after listening for a while, I realized the better sound coming from the Onkyo was now actually revealing limitations of the speakers that were less evident with the slightly muddier sound of the old Yamaha. The vocals were a bit tinny and I was still dealing with the issue of the sound being too bright, although this aspect was a bit improved from the Yamaha. At this point I also looked around the room and realized it may be partially to blame for the brightness. High ceilings with bare walls cause a lot of reflections of high frequencies There were three viable options: 1) Spend a lot more on a surround receiver or separates in an attempt to get clarity and less brightness ($$$), 2) try room treatments to tame the brightness (costly and usually unattractive), 3) try new speakers. I opted for 3 as the old Infinities were probably outgunned by the new receiver anyway (and I really wanted new speakers). One of the high-end stores in the area sells B&W speakers and I'd always wanted a set. They have an overnight demo program so I lugged home a pair of mid-range 3-way B&W's to try out. With the B&W's I could hear even more detail in the music, the mid-range was richer, and the bass fuller and cleaner. They did exactly what I thought I was looking for. They made the music very detailed and they were very fast. For those who don't hang out in speaker review forums, this means they respond to changes in volume very quickly. For instance, each snare drum strike might be individually discernable, a cymbal brush stroke may consist of individual strands of the brush hitting the cymbal instead of a constant "whoosh" However, I discovered that after listening for more than 1/2 an hour at a time, that level of detail resulted in a feeling of having my head inside a drum rather than sitting in the audience. The vocals were also a bit harsh. Detail fatigue. So it turned out what I thought I was looking for wasn't what I really wanted. The B&W's went back and I ended up with Wharfedale Opus speakers for mains and center. These use fabric dome (rather than metal) tweeters and mid's. With these I gave up some of the speed and a tiny bit of clarity, but gained beautiful vocals. They also tamed the brightness. I can listen to these for hours and just smile. A great fit for me when paired with the Onkyo. Now that the music criteria was taken care of, it was on to movies. I had not really considered the Audyssey calibration tool that comes with the Onkyo to be very valuable After all, I had managed to set up the surround on.

By Glynn Clapsaddle I was very disappointed when I received this to see that it was simply a package of two cables. Cables that you can pick up at Radio Shack for MUCH cheaper. Just ridiculous. By Paradux Using this with a Sony BD player and Onkyo 5.1 amp linked via coax audio; TV via HDMI. After all settings were completed, the action and big explosions sounded great. If you listen to movies using TV speakers, you don't know what you're missing. BUT I couldn't hear dialog. Checked all settings, and searched online forums. I tried to boost the dB for the center but still couldn't hear. Speakers are connected via Monster Cable instead of the flimsy speaker cable provided (so small the connectors won't even hold it). Then I used the test tone from the amp to find out the center channel speaker doesn't work. I'm using an existing bookshelf speaker for center for now. Otherwise, the bases sound fine and rest of the speakers seem more than powerful enough for my tiny home theater room. Watched Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D with 6-year old, and the combination 3-D video and 3-D audio were a winner with him For a small room, with a decent amp and proper cables (do yourself a favor, and get at least 16-gauge) this set should work just fine for most movie lovers. Audiophiles should look elsewhere. And test all speakers before you throw out the packaging (as I did). UPDATE: after mentioning to Amazon the center channel was not working but I didn't want to pack everything up, they promptly shipped me a new set FOC - with pre-paid return as well. Next day. I am only using 3.1 right now but the sound is far superior to any pre-packaged HTS that I have looked at. I liked the idea of the Yamaha name, but was concerned the quality would be less than optimal because the price was so low. While I am not an audiophile I like to have the best my limited money can buy. The 6 Ohm rating was a big hiccup for me as well, as 8 ohm is what all receiver ratings are calculated on. But after looking closely at the manual for my receiver I found it supported 6-16 Ohm speakers. So we were good there. My receiver, a Pioneer VSK-519 showed up before my speakers so I hooked it up to some Sony book shelf speakers to "test it out" When the Yamaha speakers came I was only able to hook up three of the five speakers with the included speaker wire, so I used the Sony's as R and L. The Sony's put out noticeably more sound than the Yamaha's which was at first concerning to me. And once I got them out of the way I had to turn the receiver up higher to get the same output. I watch movies right around 50-52 when with the Sony speakers, I was quite happy at 40. I suspect this is related to the 82 db rating (and the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5). But turning the Amp up a little higher is not a big deal and the Receiver has been very happy in it's low ventilation area, and is in no danger of overheating. I also upgraded my speaker wire to 16 gauge and have not noticed a difference. Other thoughts, even though the Sub is a 100W amp, it only produces 50W of output, just like it says on the Manufacture site So Amazon was a little misleading there. No big deal, because the.

Wolfe After much research, this is one of the only economically priced surround-sound amps that decodes the surround-sound information in the amp itself before passing video on up to the TV. Many of the HDMI switching amps out there only switch the video, and do NOT decode surround (due to the DRM encryption on some HDMI signals) only 2ch PCM. Look over Sony's site, they have alot of good info for this unit. For the price it would be really hard to beat. Nice Stuff: -Surround decode from the HDMI sources -The remote also controls my Sony Blu-ray player -The Main L-R speaker outs are selectable to use either full range speakers, or small surround speakers -You can Name all the inputs whatever you want -For a small home theater, sound quality is good -auto shut off after 30mins of inactivity Not so nice stuff -Only three (3) HDMI inputs, i could have used more for later, but for now all I needed was my DishNetwork box, Xbox and blu-ray -Only one of the three digital audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coax) is programmable to any input This would have been nice to be able to assign any of them to the remaining analog video inputs -Analog video inputs (Wii in my case) do not go out the HDMI output. Solid entry level unit for the money By Snmi43 Overall this is a great deal for someone looking for a straight-to-the-point, entry level 5.1 system. It doesn't have an onscreen menu, or tons of HDMI ports, but for less than $200, it provides plenty of power and enough options to create an economical yet strong performance package. If you want to make your first jump to intro home theater but don't want to sweat the details, this does the job well. I would consider my setup to be a simple, economical, and practical system for someone looking for a good overall sound without getting too technical or overinvested I paired this receiver with an Energy RC Micro 5.1 speaker system and a 40" Sony Bravia LCD in a 14x20 room. (You could always go with cheaper speakers, but if you're going to spend extra anywhere, spend it on the speakers.) I hooked up a BluRay player, HD cable box, Wii, and an iPod dock. The receiver doesn't have lots of inputs - 1 HDMI out and 3 in (most people always want one more than what they have anyway). Extra HDMI's always help with avoiding early obsolescence, but I'm not planning on adding any other devices. If you have multiple game systems and other audio devices you're planning on adding down the road, I would move on to something more advanced. Even if you have an older DVD player, you can hook it up just fine, however HDMI will make your life much easier with this unit. (I originally started with an old compnonent DVD player and then ended up getting a BluRay player - The receiver WILL NOT send the audio through the HDMI OUT to the tv unless you hook up through the HDMI IN You will have to send an additional audio signal such as optical if you use analog inputs). It replaced a 7 year old Denon 1601 that in order to complete work one night. It makes my 5.1 Polk large system, at least as good as the older Denon, which always sounded. For this price, good sound quality probably given this criticism about the features that will differentiate this entity. Let's talk video first. The good thing about the video editing is that you can connect up to something and it's the video feed on your TV-mails via a single cable. Its basically a big switch, you simply switch between A / V sources. They leave the TV at the entrance, through which it is connected, and it feeds the TV whatever source you choose and send the sound through the speakers. I hooked my Samsung HL-S5688W DLPSamsung 56 "1080p DLP HDTV, make it through the HDMI output. I used the two HDMI inputs on my Samsung DVD player and my Comcast Motorola HD DVR connected, I have connected my Samsung VCR via a composite input and RCA cable for video sound. Onkyo is nearly all their sent through the HDMI inputs using the HDMI output. You do not get any if you're upconverting HDMI inputs and output via HDMI. If you are feeding 1080i through the HMDI inputs, you get 1080i. Enter the 1080p, and you get 1080. (I have my DVR and DVD player to send the 1080 entry.) This is not the case with the component inputs. It will send the input as 720p, even if the tray of the 1080th Only the HDMI inputs for 1080 sources. If you have more than two 1080 sources, this Onkyo is not for you, because only two HDMI (1080 capable) inputs. I think you could be an HDMI switch HDMI 3-port switch remote (or another brand), if required in the future, or just your third HD input (video game, maybe) look at 720p, or maybe your TV has an HDMI input to another peculiarity is that it will send the HDMI digital sound that you associate with the component video inputs. This is only a problem if the TV to produce sound. I use all speakers for 5.1 sound, so I do not care. The video output looks a little better than watching video directly from the source, but I'm not sure its noticably different. (The word video upconversion. It's just interpolation. Upconverting trying to add lines were there were no lines in the original source. It's not going to SDTV look like HDTV. You can be a little better, but in his eyes of the beholder, and some sources seem to look better than others converted. To me, not worth much. My DVR can upconvert, how can my DVD player and my TV I have tried everything and I do not think any of them can improve a lot SDTV. If you want to try this upscale receiver, there is a hidden menu to turn on upconverting 480 HDMI input to 720p, but will also make it downgrade 1080 HDMI input to 720p. Hold down the AUX and power buttons to activate the hidden menu. I omit, called automatic mode, but my DVR upconvert 480-1080 before sending it to the Onkyo's. Other things are hidden in the menu settings as default video sharpness, contrast, etc.) I also like the remote. Its quite small, but double check all my equipment very well, even Comcast / Motorola DVR. My wife has put away all other remotes, so it's a good sign. Can operate the entire system with the included remote Onkyo. My parents 65 years also figured out how to use the entire system so that the remote must be pretty good. I must say that the Onkyo also simplifies the transition Another feature that is nice is the front panel inputs. You can connect the camera very easily that way. It also has an optical audio input on the front. Configuration is quite simple, especially if you have some experience setting up home theater. Otherwise, the manual explains things.

Seely I bought the Onkyo TX-NR808 to replace my aging 10 years old Lexicon DC-2 preamp and Carver Professional amplifiers. Miller and Kreisel Onkyo is THX 5.1 750 speaker system. I thought that after 10 years that I have an audio update to use, even if Lexicon is still a great device, but I did not feel like $ 6,500 a time to spend. I wanted a receiver that all of the newer DTS and Dolby surround sound formats and had to drive 4 ohm M & K speakers (8 vs 4 ohm setting in the setup menus). It sounds great, I love the video and turn right on the settings screens. I have a Netgear Digital Entertainer Elite 9150 is connected to a single HDMI cable. Being able to use HDMI, really cleans up the wiring, because it can also send audio via the same cable. The same goes for my HD decoder, HDMI, no separate audio cable. I had no problems with Ethernet connectivity, even though I left the update via Internet streaming via computer on the network is also beautiful without problems. Pandora works perfectly. For the price and features can not be beaten. Even Amazon has the lowest price. UPDATE: 02/07/11 Still no problem. Now I have a HTPC connected to running WMC and Boxee. See my review and revision companion LSi15 1120k (right speaker, even though I bought them both) if you are curious. I've used this amp to drive 4 ohm speakers. Most enthusiasts will tell you to get an external amplifier to drive them. I am usually skeptical of these claims. Myth: You must use external amplifiers to drive 4 ohm speakers. False. I drove them with an Onkyo 808 135 watts 8ohm, I'm not sure 4 ohms Onkyo specifications that are not advertised, there was absolutely no cutting of blistering ear level. There are no bumps LSI15 I heard of the C-5. A tall, gave the Energy C-5 me a headache. But LSI is still extremely soft. Speakers (LSI15) is 89dB efficiency 1 watt, so if I push it to 110 dB, would require only 128 watts to run. 110 dB is much stronger than the most comfortable to live. I guess if you listen to the strongest, which would require external amplification. Most normal people do. Tip: Do not place the receiver in position 4 ohms. Leave at 8 ohms. 4 ohm mode only serves to reduce the production of energy to protect the receiver. My receiver has two fans that I never realized. Onkyo is by inserting the smart fans. Previously, they were hot enough to boil eggs. External reinforcement would improve the sound quality? I have my doubts. I am absolutely convinced of amps to extreme volume only normal volume no amplifier needed to improve the quality (relative to this receiver, the receiver can have fewer problems). But if anyone has an amp and want to prove me wrong, I'm willing to be a believer. Onkyo 808 is a huge animal with a very strong body with two fans. It has every high-end adjustable settings that you can imagine. The one thing I discovered that the noise correction due to my current Netflix ghost. However, be that because of the noise correction algorithm associated with the 120Hz feature on the TV. Switching off the noise-correction fix ghosting for me. The quality is good to change, but maybe a little soft to SD. I have no A to B comparison with Pioneer, so I can not be sure which is better. If Marvell is better, I have not noticed it. I would not recommend buying an audio receiver for video-processing chip. More SD look bad, regardless of the upcast, and a source of high def look best with a native resolution of your TV.

An incredible value, but HDMI Video Issues March an otherwise perfect entry-level receiver from WDH Donald cannibalized indavertantly so many CES, the Onkyo's own model series with so much in an entry-level receiver that it can deter buyers from their higher featureset end models. I recently made a detailed comparison of Pioneer VSX-1020 and Denon AVR-791 and Onkyo, Pioneer joined because of its beefier amp section and OSD functions. That means I need the user to point out that their value by what appears to be an error with his ability, an HDMI video signals untouched, overshadowed in the "Through" mode. This error manifests itself in two ways: 1 24-bit sources (such as cable television) upconverted to 30 bits when the output on a display and 2 inexplicable picks 1080p 24fps sources at times as if a frame is dropped. The latter may be more noticeable for plasma owners, while the 120 Hz and 240Hz LCDs can compensate for the frame stuttering with interpolation software (ie, soap effect) for the reservation, the Onkyo a fantastic artist who has a strong current ( Power consumption is an increase of 607 to 756 watts a very mature), great flexibility (four speaker terminals can be assigned to wide, level or zone 2). Denon is limited to only seven speaker terminals and Pioneer has just left a couple of terminals. Audyssey auto callibration (2EQ) is a notch behind the Denon, but the introduction of Audyssey DSX (wide arrangement) is a feature that Denon does not offer. Although not a USB connection for iPod playback, Pioneer and Denon, it offers a PC input, the HDMI handshake nightmare may face many problems with the HTPC. I love my new Onkyo 608 by Bob As others have said, the two versions of a star not to comment on the new Onkyo 608 (no point for me). Anyway, I love my new Onkyo 608th Never check these things, but I wanted to give props to this receiver. I was debating between this and the new Pioneer 1020th But I have heard that the amplifiers of the pioneers not compare with the Onkyo amp. Even if you can not check the truth of this, I think the Onkyo amp is a very high quality. I've noticed a lot to increase the power over my previous Yamaha receiver (the model that comes with the Yamaha HTIB 390) It takes a lot more sound, and I love the ability to take advantage of HD audio. I noticed a huge difference in the monitoring of fidelity compression Dark Knight Dolby Digital and Dolby True HD. The track was intended to include a lot of bass, and even HD. The regular Dolby does not compare. Thus, high-definition audio is definitely worth having if you own a Blu-ray. As the quality of video (some transfers are better than others, the quality of known reference), not all audio tracks will have a big difference, but for me it's still worth it. Back to Onkyo: I love it. There are so many options you can modify. If you like the ability to configure your computer, you'll love this receiver! Elfers first, people do not even have the "608" should not even have to post. Trying to "608", which built a fan and "606" have-nots is similar is the fact that "608" has 2x the amount of resources.
