Onkyo HT-S5100 7.1 Channel Home Entertainment System (Set of Nine, Black)

Looking for a home theater package with some genuine caliber? Then the HT-S5100 7.1-channel receiver/speaker package deserves your attention. As one of Onkyo’s second-generation HDMI-compliant packages, the HT-S5100 gets the best out of high-definition video sources and lets you connect up to three 1080p sources for switching to one display. But a quality home theater package isn’t defined by video alone. The HT-S5100 packs 1200 watts of power, backed up by Audyssey room correction technologies, to create the perfect surround-sound environment. This is also Onkyo’s first home theater package to come with a dedicated dock for iPod playback. With the right gear, you can even connect and subscribe to SIRIUS radio. And fleshing out the receiver is a 7.1 speaker package designed to sound even better than it looks when matched with the latest high-definition displays.

I knew the HDMI connections were video pass-through only. I knew the connections available weren't up to snuff with the 'bigger boys' (Onkyo 606 and on). But I didn't care... The quality I get for the price tag is a complete steal. In this package, you get 7 speakers and a beasty powered subwoofer (290 watts). The receiver has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 output, 2 component ins and 1 out, 2 optical inputs and I believe 1 coaxial. There are a bunch of extra connections for VCR's, DVD players, game consoles, etc. Now, for quality.... This system is LOUD!!! I owned a sony htib before this and they're child's play compared to these. After some manual calibrating, I popped in the HD DVD version of 'Transformers' and... WOW!! I was hearing stuff I didn't know was in the sound field. Music is very crisp and clear. You could hear every instrument during jazz or acoustic sessions. Games are unbelievable on this setup. The calibration mic setup didn't sound too good to me. It was a bit flat for my standards. But, to each his own, right? One last thing, for people who say, 'this system runs too hot', gimme a break. IT'S SUPPOSED. For the amount of things the receiver does, be happy that it doesn't blow up. Just be sure have it in a property ventilated area and you're good for 20 years. Overall, I highly suggest this system. It even comes with an iPod dock. Oh... and be sure to upgrade to 16 guage or lower wires. The ones supplied are crap. =] 255 of 288 people found the following review helpful. You don't actually want this By Pope Clement VII Yeah, it's a 7.1 system in the sense if you have a decoded 8 channel analog output you can get a full 7.1 surround as it was intended. But, for any other source, there's no real 7.1, end of story. Optical and coax inputs can only handle encoded formats with more than 2 channels. So any Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master 7.1 sources you may have will not work over optical or coax. Sure, you can get 5.1 through them and setup the Onkyo to "fill in" the missing speakers, even though you actually have the data for them on your source. That's not what you want, though. The reason is the HDMI Pass Through, which, ironically is touted as a feature. The only way to get 7.1 digital audio is over HDMI, and this Onkyo receiver cannot process HDMI audio of any format. It simply passes it through to the TV, acting like an HDMI switch. Your TV ultimately demuxes the audio: displaying the video, and sending the audio back to the Onkyo through an optical or coaxial audio cable. So, unless you have a standalone Blu Ray player with 7.1 analog outputs or a PC with a 7.1 surround sound card and are going to use the analog outputs (over 4 mini stereo to RCA cables), keep on looking for a receiver that decodes HDMI audio rather than passes it through. You simply cannot get 7.1 audio from this over a PS3 or a cable box. Blu Ray movies would need a standalone BD Player, and not a cheap one that only decodes to 5.1. On the other hand, if you were looking for a 5.1 system, this is a pretty good 5.1 system. The speakers are pretty nice, and the subwoofer is more than capable. It has no problems playing 5.1 through optical and coax sources, and has 2 of each, which is plenty for most people. And you get a free HDMI switch with it, if your TV is short 1 HDMI input, that's a good $150 savings over a seperate HDMI switch. 45 of 51 people found the following review helpful. Like it today, will hate it in the future By T. Christner If you intend to use this with a DVD player using coax or optical connectors, then this system will be great. The is my current set up and I like the quality of sound and the ease of set up. But my praise ends there. With the understanding that this unit has HDMI (plastered on the box and on the receiver), I was confident

Pioneer VSX-1120-K Receiver: The Ultimate Home Theater Control Center

Pioneer takes the Yellow Jersey in Mid-Range Receivers By WDH Despite the rather disappointing announcement of their departure from the Plasma arena and the de facto departure from in-house blu ray players, Pioneer appears to have made a bold move into the highly competitive mid-range receiver market. Denon and Onkyo have released fiercely competitive models in the $700 price-range that couple either excellent video processing, streamed media, and ample connectivity. My recent review of the Denon AVR891 confirmed their continued competitive product line, but I did lament it lacked some of the swiss army knife approach sometimes imperfectly utilized by Onkyo (the 891 lacks internet-streaming, surround wide processing, and basic rear-panel connectivity). That said, Denon's use of the ABT chipset (begun last year with the ABT-2010 and continued this year with the ABT-2015) was my preferred AVR video processing (I performed it over Reon XV, Farjouda chips, and lower spec'd ABT chips). Having owned the 1120's successor both in elite (21) and no-elite (9040) form, I was always impressed by their power, sonic quality, and design. That said, they lacked what had rapidly become basic featureset in 2009 (wide or height presence configuration, only four hdmi inputs, and only analogue video processing). The 1120's little brother the VSX-1020 established a reasonably high bar for the 1120 to hurdle in bringing internet radio, iphone control, six hdmi, and wide/height processing in a tidy package widely available under $500. That said, the 1020 was a very compotent and efficient entry-level receiver, but lacked some of the longer legs for bigger rooms or thirsty speakers. Enter the 1120. The 1120 shares the same deep chassis of the 9140 and Elite 21. At over 17" deep, it is almost four inches deeper and four pounds heavier than the 1020. It's also over two inches deeper and four and a half pounds heavier than the Denon 891. The design is conservative and almost identical to last year's 9040 with a front fascia that is masculine and angular. Beneath the pop-out front input cover are a USB port for Iphone and Ipod playback, an HDMI port and the setup microphone input. The HDMI input is a nice touch for camcorders and other temporary connected inputs (Onkyo offers similar with 708 while Denon has six rear-mounted HDMI inputs). The rear panel is also similar to last year's 9040, but four more speaker binding posts have been added for height and wide processing (Pioneer uses MCACC wide since the auto-callibration software is not done via Audyssey DSX). Importantly, the Pioneer has 9.1 pre-outs for those looking to use an external amplifier. Unfortunately, this connectivity has been removed from the Denon AVR2311 and 891 that are natural competitors of the 1120 by price alone. The remote is very similar to the 1020 in layout, but it is backlit and contains XM and Zone 3. While Pioneer's remote is not as easily identified with small, similar buttons compared to the Denon, it is learning and back-lit, which is a step ahead of the 891/2311/991/3311. Onyko offers a learning remote in the TX NR708, but is not fully backlit. Setting up the receiver with MCACC is quick and easy, but each MCACC setting measures the white noise and reverb from speakers from only a single memory point whereas Audyssey MultiEQ in the Denon incorporates multiple locations' measurements. This might have an impact on callibration depending on the layout of one's room. That said, I find both tend have a significant impact on accuracy and each have their tweaking benefits. Once I had setup my 5.1 plus heights layout, I was very impressed with the 1120. While it appears to share a lot of the same audio section with the 9040, it seems to have a wider soundstage, which might have something to do with the presence speakers (I was previously passively bi-amping the height speakers with the 9040).

Great upgrade from my previous Yamaha By K. C Wilson I own a rx-v663 and upgraded this past weekend to the RX-V667. Skipping the 665 model was a good thing. This one has a great on screen GUI for changing the settings. It's an overlay, so you don't lose the video in the background when changing settings. It pops out from the left side and then you scroll up and down to pick the setting to change. Then those options are popped up from the bottom of the screen and you scroll right and left. 6 HDMI is more than enough for me, in fact I have 3 left over after changing out things. Biggest advantage is I am now able to plug in everything in to the receiver and able to change the label that shows up on the receiver and the tv screen when changing sources. My components running into the receiver are as follows Oppo BDP-83 PS3 Computer with HDMI interface (radeon 5770 so I get sound and audio) These next two are connected via Component video (R,G,B) Xbox 360 (optical out for audio) Wii To run all these the Remote has 5 HDMI buttons and 6 AV buttons. I can actually choose each source independently with one button, kind of nice. I also have the YDS11 Ipod dock, it works great with the new receiver. Interface is greatly improved with album art being shown to the left of the song title on the screen and browsing capabilty. This really looks a lot better than it did on the RX-V663 and is another overlay screen. Now they just need a good screen saver to go with it. This would all be worthless if the sound quality did not match up with the 663. Big one for me was continued support of DSD across HDMI. The Oppo BDP-83 plays SACD disks and so does my PS3. The 667 has a signal information selection and from the PS3 it reports PCM as it should since the PS3 converts it to PCM before sending the signal to the receiver. The Oppo using the same disk reports DSD back on the receiver. and yes the sound quality equals the 663. Sidenote: There is an audible difference in the sound when switching to Pure Direct Mode. I played John Hiatt's "Master of Disaster" which is a Hybrid SACD and switched between straight and Pure Direct. Pure direct seemed to have less bass, the straight mode was obviously making adjustments to the bass in the background. Honestly though this could be due to my speaker setup as

The Net-Tune features work well with a minimum of setup fuss. The unit is probably a little pricier per feature than some other units, but the trade-off in sound quality and ease-of-use is worth it.Highly recommended... 15 of 20 people found the following review helpful. By John O'Donnell I had been looking at several of the Yamaha models through the spring of 2009, as well as its competitor's (Sony, Onkyo, Denon), for an upgrade of my ancient Sony receiver (one of the first Pro-logic receivers). I just installed a set of Definitive Technology Mythos speakers ordered through Amazon.com, including a power-hungry Mythos Three center channel. I wanted this receiver to be the core of my Home Theater as it's primarily use for improving my Sony Blu-ray and TiVo Series3 HD DVR experience. Sports, such a baseball is vivid with the upscale feature from 1080i to 1080p (although it has not yet improved the performance of my Seattle Mariners). 1080i broadcast shows such as Chuck, both sound and look great. The optional YDS-11SL iPod dock works well with both a 4th generation Nano and an 80G iPod Classic, including the videos. What is worth the wait is the clean layout on the back, the heft of the discrete amp, and the Blu-ray friendly support with both the scene button and the Decoders for HD audio formats: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Yes they do make a difference in your home theater experience. The audio calibration microphone works as advertised. Silent Cinema (headphone mode) is also a nice feature. What could be improved - You need to keep the manual next to you for the first week to figure out some of the controls such as accessing all of the iPod controls with the dock. I was also sorry to see HD Radio(tm) missing from this "top of the mid-range" Yamaha's. The older RX-V863 has it, but this one doesn't. Also the four scene buttons are not programmable. I wanted to program the TV scene button for my TiVo (HDMI #2), no luck. In the end, if you are looking for a quality receiver that performs well on both movies and music, and can drive your amp hungry speakers to their potential, look no farther that this RX-V765. It really was worth the wait. 33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. 1065 & 765 Feedback By T. Swanson I needed to replace a couple of old receivers so I found a great deal on the RX-V1065 and RX-V765 on Amazon. I ended up getting both of them for aboout what 2 V665's would have cost me a a Big Box store. I first setup my Main Theate Room with the 1065, I thought it was somewhat difficult to get everything the way I wanted it but the automatic speaker setup was slick and the sound is fantastic compared to my old Sony I had previously. The Menu system takes some getting use to but once you do it's not bad to navigate. All in all I was pretty darn happy with my purchase, My JBL's sounded much better then before and although I didn't really notice any difference in video quality, it was as good as before and now I had everything coming thru the same box. Surround sound was a huge step up from my old receiver also, you are almost looking behind you now because you'd swear someone is behind you, where on my old Sony it was more or less a quieter front speaker. I then went to hook up my 765 in my cave TV room, first thing that I noticed was that is basically identical to the 1065, sure the menu system is not as polished but as far as the functionality that I need it is the same. I have a few year old Bose surround sound in this room with a JBL center chanel speaker and what a HUGE difference this receiver made over my old Onkyo, the Onkyo was really good for music but surround sound was sub par, but it was 10 years old I guess. Granted I'm only hooking up a Xbox 360, blue ray and TV in this room but watching Vikes beat up the the Packers in surround sound with this receiver was great, I haven't figured out which sound field I like best but there are a couple perfect for sports. One of the coolest things was when I grabbed the TV remote from my Samsung LCD by mistake to turn the volume down and it says RX-V765 un the upper corner and starts to tun down the volume

The 1080p-compatible HDMI (6 in/1 out) supports Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, 24 Hz Refresh Rate and Auto Lip-Sync compensation, as well as the latest HDMI features like 3D and Audio Return Channel. CINEMA DSP Digital for Enhanced Surround Realism Conventional multi-channel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. SILENT CINEMA and Virtual CINEMA DSP SILENT CINEMA, a variation of Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology, makes it possible to listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue. Virtual CINEMA DSP lets you enjoy the effects of CINEMA DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front / center / presence speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) Yamaha's Adaptive DRC technology automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume that is selected. Adaptive DRC refines the dynamic range parameters to make low volume sounds easier to hear (narrower dynamic range) while retaining the massiveness felt during high volume (wider dynamic range). And because our ears lose sensitivity to low and high sounds as volume decreases, it continually adjusts these frequency ranges according to the volume and to the input signal level. Compressed Music Enhancer Refreshes Your Music Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible. SCENE: A New Level of Operating Ease Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for DVD Viewing, Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. Push a SCENE button to automatically launch play of the preset source. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, XM Listening, TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing. Browse and select the settings quickly accomplished by rotating the Input knob and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. You can even change the SCENE names for convenience. Audio Delay Compensation Keeps Your Experience On Track The latest display devices perform complex internal processing, causing time lag in the video signal. It is a small difference, but because the audio arrives first, the viewer may feel that something is not natural. The Audio Delay function for adjusting Lip-Sync matches the audio to the timing of the output of the video on the screen (0-240ms). Included microphone designed for YPAO helps you easily set up your speaker system YPAO Sound Optimization YPAO sound optimization for automatic speaker setup lets you set up your surround sound speakers simply and easily. An included microphone designed for YPAO will help you set up your speakers for optimal performance, no matter the room. Auto Power Down after 4, 8 or 12 hours (selectable) and extremely low power consumption. Expand Your Yamaha System with Convenient Connectivity The optional YDS-12 Universal Dock lets you connect your iPod or iPhone to the receiver. And the YDS-12 is "Works with iPhone"-certified, so you can get the most out of your iPhone music library with zero hassles. The optional YID-W10 Wireless Dock System for iPod/iPhone ensures that you enjoy maximum sound quality and no lip sync (AV matching) problems. The optional YBA-10 Bluetooth Wireless Audio Receiver docks to the receiver and supports A2DP stereo audio streaming, so users can enjoy music wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled smartphones, Windows PCs, and Macs. Jones Hello We were in the market to replace our old (10+ yrs) but trusty Denon 1801 to move into a modern updated unit with the latest connections and mainly BR sound with DTS-HD and True-HD. Like the Denon I looked for reviews and mainly reader feedback. I picked at least one model from the mjor manufactures...Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, Harmon Kardon and Yamaha. I came away with two out of the list..Yamaha RX-V667 and Denon AVR-891 (same as 2311CI). Both fit my list of needs and budget. I did look at the newer RX-V671 but being new was out of my price range. But the day I made my choice, which was the Denon 891, it went off sale. The next day a RX-V671 "open box" got listed at almost the same price and I grabbed it. Yamaha's as long as I can remember alwy have had good sound. They don't get the same reconignition as Denon or the amount of mega reviews of Onko but they've alwys been fairly good. They made great strides since the 'RX-Vx65" series with the "x67" series last year. And the newer line of the RX-Vx71's improve on it. One thing you can count on from Yamaha is n abundant of sound fields and choices. This 671 carries on that tradition. The sound is clean and clear thanks to the 7 channel discrete amps. Besides HD Audio with Cinima DSP 3D and it's 17 programs Yamaha offers a unique "7.1 w/Presence Speaker" setup which I'm using. It's basically a 5.1 with two added speakers preferably on the outside of the main fronts. It addsa more deminson of sound to the listener. The Presence Speakers are set at about 35% instead of 100% to fill in in. I'm sold on it and can tell the difference. While Denon and Onkyo uses the highly touted 'Audyssey' for sound fine tuning Yamaha has it's own YPAO. It's a real gem and takes out the guess work of trying to get the best sound out there. I did both auto and mnual and whatever the YPAO does it does right. In the sound menu it'll show your configuration, distance, dB levels and so on but it doesn't stop there. You can fine tune the speakers even more. The only cavet in the YPAO was it constantly labled my fronts as small when they are large. But you can change an override the settings and also save custom settings. The look and design of front and back is well thought of. I like the split gloss & satin metal look on the front and as always a good size volume knob. lso the readout on the front is very good. I can read anything from 10ft away easy. You have a set of inputs on the front and the inclussion of a USB port (the RX-V667 doesn't have) for Ipod or USB stick. The back has plenty of inputs but for thos looking for a set of pre-outs or 6 channel analog look at last years 667 or even the highly touted 867 model which is loaded. Still plenty for the average user. Just make sure you use "Banana Plugs" for speakers as it's tight for bare wire connections. One thing I read which was a big plus on the Yamaha was it's GUI interface and navigation. When you turn it on it blends in with the current picture and not on it's on so you don't miss a step. It's also easy to get around and make changes to say sound fields with the current input. Very useful for radio, Ipod, MP3's and network music. This was a big part in choosing Yamaha. And speking of Network this usint has it which was another reason. Within five minutes o hooking it up it found a new firmware update and DL it. I had no issues with playing my MP3's thru WMP connected thru AT&T Uverse to a Netgear switch to the 671. And with the "Compressed Music Enhancer" and the 7.1 Presence Speaker setup the sound was the best I've heard in a long time. I'm still playing with all the various sound fields. The 671 does has HDMI pass thru and so far no issues except ith the Xbox 360 due to it having component connection. While it does pss thru the signal and sound you have to leave the AVR on to do so. ith AT&T and the BR Player

Most helpful customer reviews 69 of 73 people found the following review helpful. AVR 3310CI Good & Bad By R. Kruppa The AVR 3310CI is loaded with nice features. Excellent sound quality, inputs for just about anything, and decent menus for setting up and using the receiver. The amplifiers give a very good quality sound, not as good as my MacIntosch system but not bad for the money. Construction is good and it runs fairly cool being it is in a somewhat enclosed area. Technical support is good in that there is little wait time when calling. Now for the bad. I have now gone through 3 AVR 3310CI receivers trying to get one that works. I believe that most if not all of the issues I have are due to firmware problems as the hardware seems to work just fine. I would try to update the firmware but there are even problems with this function as it takes forever (many hours) and most of the time it will abort or hang in the middle of the download/update process so you have to try and try again. My first unit eventually got into a hang state in that it couldn't update the firmware and as a result the receiver just kept on trying with no success. During this time the other functions were not available. According to Denon there was no over the phone fix for this problem and suggested I either return it to the store and send it in for repair but that I am responsible for the shipping costs. My second (and as of Saturday my 3rd unit) has two out-of-the-box issues. First is when connecting to Internet radio I get a "Please Wait" window. Sometimes this hangs the system and sometimes I can recover from it. On my recently installed unit this past weekend I immediately got this message and waited 15 minutes or longer and still no resolution. I turned off/on the unit and after a while the message went away and I was able to use the Internet function. The second problem is when selecting the setup menu button. The menu comes up fine but within 5 seconds it starts to go dimmer and dimmer and to the point that you cannot see the menu on the TV screen anymore. This occurred with units number 2 and 3. I am afraid to do a firmware update due to the many problems that I had with the first unit and I was told that others had the same problem (even Denon admits to this and recommended to me NOT to perform updates). I have spent many hours on the phone with the Denon Techies and they say to just send the unit back and they will repair it. However, I have to pay for the shipping costs (estimated at $50). I refuse do this on out-of-the-box problems. These are design problems and not normal failures. So at this point in time I'm considering switching to a different model number and hope that it has a more stable design. One other area is in regards to the search and general navigating capabilities on the Internet. Given the price of the AVR 3310CI this function could be a lot more sophisticated as the current function is pretty basic. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Firmware Problems By Robert R. Cox I've had my Denon 3310CI AVR for 6 months now and it has been working fine. That is until I did the firmware update. Something has gone wrong with the programming in the system. The main remote does not work as it should and gives unpredictable results. The unit no longer connects to the internet and I can't see any network activity lights at the back of the box. When switching from once source to another, for example from DVD to PS3, there is no sound but there is video. I have to turn off the unit and turn it back on to get the sound. I'm unsure what to do now. If I had seen these reviews before I would not have upgraded the firmware because the unit was working fine out of the box. There were no problems during the firmware update. The power did not go off and internet connectivity was never lost. So, it totally confuses me as to what the problem could be. I'm currently researching the net for answers. So in conclusion, you can buy the unit

Harman Kardon AVR 146 Home Theater Receiver with iPod Control and HDMI connectivity

The AVR-146's sonic quality and sophisticated features make it an exceptional value. If A/V receivers are the heart of a home entertainment system, then Harman/Kardon AVRs are both heart and mind. My last was the Onkyo TX-SR500, and it was solid. But I wasn't completely satisfied with the 5.1 surround sound generated from it. The audio was serviceable, but I knew it should sound better...especially considering it was connected to an excellent set of speakers (Onkyo SKS-HT500). So, without being too serious about it, I decided to look around for a new receiver. I was specifically looking for an AVR that would support HDMI audio output now that I have an HD-DVD player, but frankly there aren't that many available in the store. I did find several affordable receivers that might be an improvement over what I already have. I especially had my eye on a Yamaha and this Harman/Kardon AVR. Neither supported HDMI audio, but they do provide HDMI ports for pass-through. Neither support TrueHD or DTS-HD, which also intrigued me. When it was said and done, I decided those fancy features aren't really important for me right now. What IS important is a strong 5.1 surround sound at an affordable price. Did I mention both AVRs were out-of-the-box? I couldn't resist. I had heard some good things about the sound quality of H/K receivers and it's pleasing to the eye as well. I took it. And I'm so glad I did. First, it has an amazing number of inputs and outputs. Plenty of ports for analog cables, coaxial and optical digital audio cables, s-video and component video cables. Maybe someday I'll actually have all those cables. As it is, I have my cable box and HD-DVD player connected with the fiber-optic cables and my other DVD/CD player connected by coaxial digital cable. And everything sounds incredible! Now I don't want to imply that Onkyo is substandard. They make a great product. But my Onkyo AVR was probably a bit old and worn out. Sounds sometimes seemed muffled, particularly when watching movies with lots of explosions or gunfire. But the H/K is definitely an improvement. Right now, I'm watching one of the Harry Potter DVD's right now and I'm just enveloped in glorious 5.1 surround sound! The audio is sharp, crisp and, when need be, loud. When I played my Brandi Carlile CD, it sounded incredibly powerful and rich...and that's just from the Dolby ProLogic II - Music setting. I used to listen to CDs through the analogue cables to get decent audio quality from all 5 speakers and the subwoofer, but I think I'll keep the AVR on digital. One thing that may turn-off potential buyers is the low wattage per speakers from the AVR-146 at only 30 watts per channel. I suppose if you need a new AVR for a huge Home Theater room you should get something more powerful. But I've had receivers with highter watts and they never sounded THIS good. I don't know what else to say about that...Harman/Kardon makes a great audio product and I'm truly enjoying my listening experience so far. 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. HDMI Users- Beware By Paul Reynolds I'm happy with this unit and it does sound great. I think the amplifier power is more than enough for a small/medium sized room. It seems to be a better quality amplification than what I was getting with my "more powerful" Sony receiver. Like others, the big reason I bought this was the 2 HDMI inputs and I was disappointed to learn that it doesn't process the HDMI data in any way. This causes 2 problems worth noting: 1 - It will not decode the HDMI audio. So you'll need to run coax or optical cables from your source device if you want surround sound audio. Otherwise, the HDMI audio is passed on to your HDMI display (which is probably a TV with just 2 speakers). 2 - It is impossible to get into the receivers settings without using the On Screen Display (OSD) and the OSD will not show up on a HDMI connected TV. Even though the unit has a nice dot matrix display, the settings aren't available that

Good Entry Level Receiver By Christopher Deweese The Denon AVR 391 does not have a lot of bells and whistles, but if you are looking for a high quality receiver at a reasonable price, you could do a lot worse. This unit has four HDMI ports on the back...and that's about it. It doesn't have any component hookups. It has a few composite connections for audio and video. It also has a few digital audio connections (coaxial and optical). It does not upconvert analog video to 1080p. If you can live without a few of these features you will likely be impressed with what you do get. It decodes pretty much all of the current HD audio codecs. Blu-ray movies look and sound phenomenal through this receiver. I have my PS3 and Xbox360 hooked up to it and my games sound incredible. I even have my Wii's audio passing through this receiver and it sounds good too. I'm not really in to 3D, but this receiver supports HDMI 1.4a, so if you've got a 3D compatible player and TV you're good to go. Generally speaking, it's very simple to hook up and operate. It does not have on screen menus, but configuring the speakers is pretty easy using the units display (it all has to be done manually). The remote isn't great, but it's not bad either. It's fairly intuitive and easy to read. It's not backlit or anything like that. It'll control your iPod via a Denon dock though (which actually does have an on screen menu, but it's not much to look at). If you're just interested in getting the basics (audio and video), then this receiver is a good way to go, especially if all of your components are HDMI. 32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Simply Amazing By Movie Guy I've had the 391 for a couple of days now and am very impressed. While I did consider the 591 and other models in the current Denon line, I've been on a "simplicty" kick here recently and have been seeking out high quality components that give me the features I really want without the added cost and complications of the features that I do not want. My main pre-purchase concern was that a receiver at this price point, even from Denon, would sound underpowered and thin. This is definitely not the case. Its powering 5 Polk speakers (TSi200 fronts, Tsi100 surrounds, CS10 center along with a HSU sub) with no problem. The sound is strong and clear with room to spare. Having configured other Denon receivers in the past, manual setup was a breeze. The 391 has more than enough HDMI and other inputs to meet my current and future needs. The FM tuner seems to be especially strong. Five years ago, I couldn't have imagined a receiver with these features and of this quality for $250.00. Denon has an entry level winner here; strongly recommended for those seeking excellent 5.1 audio at this price point. Captain Spaulding is online now Report Post Edit/Delete Message 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. All the features you need, in one AVR. Best entry-level AVR out there. Highly recommended. By Nadeem This is the best Entry level AVR out there in the market and the first one from Denon in 2010 model line-up and I have to say that this beast is packed with all the essential feature, an entry-level AVR must have. Not all of us need a 8.1 channel Surround Sound system, but this 5.1 channel Surround Sound system can be extended to include two addition preouts for Surround Back channels at an amazing price point. This AVR sports four HDMI 1.4a (with 3D support) inputs plus it has built-in decoders for DTS-HD Master and Dolby True HD. Among all the feature, this AVR possess, the most attractive one is the inclusion of fully discrete amps for each of the five channels to produce equal quality sound. This is a huge plus at this price point. Others features like front panel controls for ipod connectivity and Dolby Pro Logic IIx, which provides Music, Cinema and Game modes, all of them make this AVR the best out there

Bose 161 Bookshelf Speaker System (Black)

Enjoy rich, full sound from music or movies with this compact pair of sleek Bose speakers. Whether placed on a desk or bookshelf or mounted on a wall for use as surround speakers, these speakers are designed to deliver balanced, spacious sound with minimal or moderate amplifier power (10 to 100 watts per channel). Automatic protection circuitry keeps the speaker drivers from being overdriven, heightening the speakers' reliability without interfering with your listening. Bose 161 speakers in black If you'll be using them in a home-theater capacity, keep in mind that they're designed to blend seamlessly with the Bose VCS-10 center-channel speaker and any Direct/Reflecting Bose speaker system. Unlike conventional speakers, which radiate sound in a single direction, these speakers use Articulated Array driver positioning and Stereo Everywhere technology to deliver balanced sound throughout your listening area. Further, Bose's two 2.5-inch proprietary Twiddler drivers per speaker move more air from their small enclosures than similarly sized conventional drivers, creating a sound you'd expect from much larger speakers. Be sure to use the proper gauge (or thickness) of wire or speaker cable for the length required to run the distance between your amplifier and your speakers. If the length is 30 feet, use a minimum of 18 gauge (.75 mm), use 16 gauge (1.5 mm) for 45 feet or 14 gauge (2 mm) for 70 feet. Supplied custom mounting brackets offer a range of placement options. Pickering I'm not usually a huge Bose afficianado, but I use a pair of Bose 161 speakers as my rear surround speakers and they're great! I have much larger speakers for my L, R and center - and the 161s compliment them perfectly. I can hear very detailed sound coming from them - perfect for effects in movies. I'm not sure I'd use these as my primary speakers in my living room, but for surround applications, or small stereo needs, they fit the bill perfectly. They're attractive, solidly built, and easily mount to walls using the included wall brackets. 24 of 28 people found the following review helpful. In line with expectations By Peter Saflund The sport of Bose bashing aside, keep in mind these are relatively small enclosures with two 2.5 inch drivers that can crate a rear sound stage much larger than their size might suggest, and can do so without being overly fussy about placement. There always seems to be someone out there who sets their surround settings to "large", pumps up the bass, then complains that two 2.5 inch drivers in small vented plastic enclosures "have no lows", and that the sound is distorted. Neither the VCS 10 center channel or the 161s will play ear-busting levels -- the trade off of small drivers in small enclosures, and the theatre surround settings and bass management must be set accordingly. Doing this, the Bose 161s (especially when paired with the VCS 10) can produce clear focused dialog and convincing surround effects in smaller rooms. Can you do "better"? Sure, larger enclosures, with bigger drivers can play louder and lower but that doesn't mean the Bose don't deserve consideration on the basis of good performance given their style and size. If you can throw a little money at the issue and want really exceptional performance from relatively small speaker enclosures, consider the Legacy Audio Victoria speaker system with a very good multi channel theatre amp and separate processor like those offered by Adcom or Parasound. 28 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Incredible how people rate without testing By James Bond DO NOT listen to the 2 reviews giving these speakers a 1 rating. As you can see they aren't directed to this product, meaning those 2 dudes who claim to know audio greatly, haven't even tested these out. They say Bose is based on 1960 technologies and use cheap materials, but then tell me why people who have owned Bose speakers for over 25 years still have them and work like new? Tell me also why my 3 year old Bose Mediamates, my over 1 year old Bose Quietcomfort headphones, my less than 3 months old Bose Wave Music System, my less than 8 months old Bose Freestyle and Bose Companion 3, all sound like new and perform like new, even after I've pushed them way further than what they are meant to do with my A/V receiver. Also tell me if they use "cheap untreated paper" for their drivers, why did I look inside my Bose Freestyle's speaker and found an almost plastic material on the drivers? And if their sound is sooo old from the 60s, why does it sound so rich, full, clear, crisp, lifelike and bassy? Outside of that, these speakers are great and VERY cheap in price. Anyone who says these should be any cheaper is insane. They do a heck of a job, and Ive tested them a couple of times in many stores. The only reason I havent bought them yet is because I dont have enough money to also buy the Bose 601 Towers, and the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker. For now I'll keep my Bose Freestyle, which is really a 2.1 but sounds just as if it was a 5.1 speaker setup. Also for the bass, I understand youd like more bass, but that is a subwoofer's job. These have nice and enough bass for their purpose and size. Anyway, you can't expect much bass at all from the Rear Channels, the bass is mainly on the Center, Left and Right channels. Remember Bose CLEARLY

Polk Audio RM6750 5.1-channel surround sound speaker set in black (see larger image). This integrated design reveals midrange with no "hole" in the frequencies between the sats and the sub, for male vocals that are rich and full-not thin and weak like other sub/sat systems. It comes with its own subwoofer module--an 8 inch long throw driver and high current power amplifier for real ground-shaking bass thrills. Key Features Satellites use a 3-1/4-inch (8.25cm) Polymer composite cone driver: lightweight and efficient, for clear, distortion-free midrange. The center speaker uses two of the same high quality drivers for even greater output capability. Integrated baffle and grille design allows maximum sound dispersion with minimum diffraction for superior imaging and room-filling sound. Everyone in the room hears clear, well-balanced sound. High performance 1/2-inch (12mm) silk dome tweeters for superior imaging and smooth highs. Mineral-filled polypropylene enclosures are non-resonant for great looks and natural sound. Individual satellites available to accommodate 6.1 or 7.1 channel systems. Integrated keyhole slot wall mounting brackets (two keyhole slots on center channel speaker) allow for easy wall mounting, with no extra brackets or wall mounts to buy; threaded inserts accept popular articulating brackets (sold separately). The Subwoofer, in a compact ported enclosure, features an 8-inch Long-Throw Dynamic Balance poly composite driver for longer driver excursion and better linearity, resulting in big, musical bass. Built-in Subwoofer power amp (50 watts continuous/100 watts dynamic power) with active crossover offers the control you need for real home theater thrills and big, musical, accurate bass. Features variable low-pass filter and volume (level) controls, as well as phase switching toggle, and signal-sensing Auto ON/OFF, for even more control and convenience. Heffernan I have not written product reviews on Amazon before but I find them to be extremely helpful and want to give some payback. In particular, I found the home theater system and home theater speaker reviews to be very useful. The Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 channel home theater speaker system is phenomenal and an outstanding value. I had originally been looking for a home theater in a box system to mate to a newly acquired 37" LG LCD HDTV. The search was partly precipitated by the demise of the older generation DVD player we owned coupled to a failing 10 year old Onkyo surround-sound system. As I poked around on-line reviews and shopped Circuit City and Best Buy it became clear I could get more value and flexibility buying a receiver, an upscalable DVD player (improved picture with regular DVDs on HDTV) and a new speaker system than with home theater in a box. The room housing our entertainment hardware is a family room -- 20 X 20+ with a vaulted ceiling, fireplace and hearth on one end and lots of upholstered furniture -- a relatively big space to fill. However, I did not want bulky speakers. I was initially intrigued by the Amazon reviews on the Yamaha NS-SP1600, quite favorable, great price and describe great sound output for small speakers. Sadly, I couldn't find these to purchase anywhere locally, nor get them from Amazon or even from Yamaha. I heard a set that I think were badly wired at a Best Buy -- good sound, not much power. Yamaha's next higher line NS-SP5700 were bigger and clunkier looking than I liked and I couldn't find reviews. They sounded OK in a poorly set up demo. I kept shopping and was very happy I did. I looked at speaker manufacturers' websites and rapidly coned down on the Polk Audio RM6750 as looking to fill the niche I sought balancing size, quality and price. I was able to listen to them in a well set up home theater showroom at a local Circuit City and was immediately sold on the clarity and power. I bought a set for $299; they're a steal at that price and better on Amazon for $249. I brought them home, hooked them up with the Yamaha 5930 receiver ($179) and upscalable Toshiba DVD player with HDMI ($89) I had also acquired and connected to the HDTV. This is a true dream system! The speakers generate enormous high quality sound. We tested them out with "Master and Commander" -- clear highs from all, natural voice from center channel, terrific oomph from the subwoofer and amazing surround sound experience in the early battle scene. Next test was a Down to the Waterline on a Dire Straits CD -- I heard notes I never knew were there with great balance and driving bass. (The Yamaha gives multiple modes of play including 2 concert hall variants, 2 movie variants, 2 and 5 channel stereo and a few others I haven't played with yet.) I have filled this large room with amazing sound without going beyond 60% of full volume. I am a very happy customer. I had looked at the low end of high-cost speaker lines -- Bose and Cambridge Soundworks. With them, you get single speakers in front and surrounds as opposed to 3+" plus tweeter in each of the Polk Audios. Also, the Polk Audio RM6750s sound better to my ears and cost much, much less. Speaker wiring is straigtforward; wire is not supplied and best to buy/use thick gauge to handle power. Speaker set up instructions from Polk are relatively meager, especially about the subwoofer, but their website is very informative and makes a compelling argument for hooking up subwoofer in parallel with front speakers rather than using subwoofer port and sound is terrific this way. 103 of 104 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Speakers By T. Anderson I do consider myself to be picky when it comes to electronics. And I am absolutely floored that speakers this good can be had for a price this low.
